Study Skills and Retrieval
The Hungerhill Study Skills Programme
At Hungerhill, we are proud to relaunch our Study Skills Programme, an initiative designed to strengthen students’ understanding of how to study effectively and maximise their learning potential. Originally introduced in 2022, the programme is being revitalised following feedback from students who expressed a desire for more guidance on how to approach independent study and revision.
The Study Skills Programme focuses on a series of evidence-based learning and revision strategies proven to enhance long-term retention and understanding. These approaches help students to embed knowledge more deeply and prepare efficiently for assessments - skills that are valuable not only at GCSE level but throughout their entire school journey. By introducing these techniques early, we aim to ensure that all students can confidently revisit and recall prior learning when it matters most.
Our five chosen revision strategies are: flash cards, flow charts, retrieval/revision clocks, mind maps, and knowledge organisers. Each of these methods encourages active engagement with learning and supports students in developing a structured and effective approach to revision.
All students will take part in a number of sessions during PD hour to explore the programme and have received their own Study Skills Booklet. This resource explains the science behind retrieval and revision, outlines each of the five strategies in detail, and provides practical examples and planning tools.
A digital copy of the booklet is available for parents and students to access below. We encourage families to review it together and support students in developing effective study habits at home.
