Our PE kit expectations are designed to ensure that all students can participate safely, comfortably and confidently in every PE lesson. Students should arrive fully prepared with the correct kit and suitable footwear for the activity being taught.

Compulsory Hungerhill PE Kit

Students must wear an approved Hungerhill PE top. This can be either the Hungerhill quarter-zip top, Hungerhill white PE shirt/polo, a plain black jumper, or a plain white T-shirt where this has been agreed as an acceptable alternative.

For the lower body, students should wear plain black sports/cycling shorts of an appropriate length, plain black tracksuit bottoms, or plain black leggings.

Hoodies, Nike Pro-style shorts and very short shorts are not permitted as PE kit.

Students should also bring plain white or plain black sports socks.

Footwear

Students need appropriate sports trainers for indoor activities and general PE lessons. School shoes are not suitable for taking part in PE.

For field-based activities such as football and rugby, students are expected to wear studded or moulded boots during the winter months (October–March).

If a student forgets an item of kit, the PE department may provide temporary clean kit so that they can still participate. Parents/carers will be informed where appropriate.

Additional Equipment

We strongly recommend that students bring the appropriate protective equipment for the activity being taught. This helps students participate safely and reduces the risk of injury.

  • Gum shield: Rugby
  • Shin pads: Football and rugby
  • Grip socks: Floor work and gymnastics
  • Own sporting equipment: For example, badminton rackets where appropriate
  • Hat: Recommended during colder months for outdoor lessons

Jewellery, Watches and Hair

Student safety is our priority.

All jewellery must be removed before taking part in PE. This includes earrings, necklaces, bracelets and nose retainers. Fitness watches and smart watches must also be removed in line with the school's smart-watch policy.

Hair that falls below the chin must be tied back. Fringes that fall below the eye line should also be secured so that they do not affect a student's vision or create a safety risk.

New Piercings

We strongly recommend that new piercings are planned carefully so that they do not prevent students from taking part fully in PE.

For newly pierced ears, parents/carers should provide a note during the initial healing period, which is normally around 4–6 weeks. A new nose retainer should normally be supported by a parent/carer note for approximately 12 weeks.

Where a new piercing cannot safely be removed, it should be appropriately covered/taped where this is suitable. However, taping jewellery does not automatically make every activity safe. Students may only participate in activities where the teacher is satisfied that the piercing does not present a risk to themselves or others.

Injuries, Illness and Participation

Students should still bring their PE kit if they have a minor injury or illness.

Where possible, students will remain involved in the lesson through an adapted or non-active role. This may include coaching, officiating, analysing performance, supporting a group or completing another appropriate learning task.

If a student is unable to participate fully because of an injury or medical condition, parents/carers should contact the class teacher. Where there is an ongoing medical or injury concern, a health care plan should be completed where appropriate.

Students should not routinely miss PE learning because they are unable to take an active role.

Forgotten Kit and Spare Kit

We understand that students will occasionally forget an item of PE kit. The department keeps a limited supply of clean spare kit and footwear which students may borrow to allow them to continue participating.

Loaned PE kit is washed regularly.

Persistent failure or refusal to bring the correct PE kit will be followed up in line with the school's behaviour policy.

Looking After PE Kit

Please ensure that all PE kit is clearly named. Students can occasionally pick up the wrong item when changing, and labelled clothing can be returned quickly and easily.

Students may also agree with their PE teacher to leave a clearly named PE kit bag within the PE department where this would help them to remain organised.

Hydration

Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle to PE lessons, particularly during periods of warm weather and lessons involving sustained physical activity.

Our Expectation

Our aim is simple: every student should be equipped and ready to participate in PE safely and successfully.

Correct kit, appropriate footwear and suitable protective equipment allow students to make the most of their lesson while helping us maintain high standards of safety, participation and learning.

Thank you for your continued support in helping students arrive prepared for PE.
