PD Hour
At Hungerhill, we are committed to supporting every student’s personal growth alongside their academic success. Since September 2025, we have introduced a weekly rolling Personal Development (PD) hour, delivered by form tutors to their tutor groups. This programme provides dedicated time for students to explore a wide range of topics that go beyond the traditional curriculum, helping them to develop the knowledge, skills and values needed to thrive in school and beyond.
What is covered in PD Hour?
The PD Hour curriculum covers four key areas:
- Careers Education – Preparing students for the future through guidance on options, pathways and opportunities, in line with the Gatsby Benchmarks. This includes learning about different careers, developing employability skills and making informed choices about further study or training.
- Study Skills – Equipping students with strategies to become effective, independent learners. Sessions focus on areas such as revision techniques, organisation and wellbeing, time management and resilience, supporting success across all subjects.
- PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) – Covering important aspects of health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. This includes our statutory provision of Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE), delivered in a safe, age-appropriate way.
- Religious Education (RE) – Developing understanding of different faiths, beliefs and worldviews. RE contributes to students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, encouraging respect, tolerance and thoughtful reflection. At Hungerhill, we follow the new locally agreed syllabus, ensuring our provision meets statutory requirements and reflects the diversity of our community.
Why do we do it?
Personal Development is an important part of preparing our students for life beyond school. Through the PD hour, students gain:
- A stronger awareness of their future options and careers pathways.
- The skills and confidence to study independently and achieve their best.
- Knowledge that helps them to make safe, healthy and responsible choices.
- An appreciation of different cultures, faiths and values, helping them become respectful and active citizens.
How is it delivered?
The PD hour is delivered by form tutors, providing continuity and a supportive environment where students feel comfortable discussing new ideas. The programme runs on a rolling timetable, ensuring all students have equal access without missing the same lesson each week.
